Travel Hacking

Spend less. Do more. Travel cheaper.

I love finding the little tricks that make a big trip cost a whole lot less. These are the travel hacks I actually use, with real examples, simple math, and the fine print that matters.

Travel Hack 1: Start with the right travel card

A $95 travel card can pay for itself with one hotel stay.

Most travelers should start with Preferred. Big travelers can consider Reserve.

Cassie's main recommendation for most travelers

Chase Sapphire Preferred

If you travel an average amount, this is the card I would start with. It has a much lower annual fee, and it still earns valuable travel points you can use for hotels and move to travel partners like Hyatt.

Best for big travelers

Chase Sapphire Reserve

This is one of my main cards, but it is expensive. It only makes sense if you travel often enough to use its premium travel benefits and credits.

I may receive a referral bonus if you apply through my link, at no extra cost to you. Check the current offer and terms before applying.

You do not need an expensive premium card to start earning travel rewards. The Chase Sapphire Preferred costs $95 for the entire year and currently includes up to $100 back on an eligible hotel stay booked through Chase Travel each account anniversary year. If you already planned to book a hotel, you can simply book an eligible stay through the Chase Travel portal instead. The card can then give you up to $100 back, which can offset the $95 annual fee. You can also earn points on purchases, but only use a travel card if you can pay the balance in full.

The hotel must be eligible and booked through Chase Travel. Benefits and terms can change, so confirm the current offer before booking.

Christian and I are building Places on Points to make travel rewards easier to understand. It has not officially launched yet, but you can join the early list.

Travel Hack 2: Check Capital One Shopping before you book

How I cut one of my Philadelphia trips almost in half.

I was heading to Philadelphia for a wedding and needed a rental car and a hotel. Capital One Shopping sent me two offers: $100 back on the rental car and $100 back on the hotel. Both rewards are already pending in my account.

Rental car

$200 booking

$100 pending Shopping Reward

About $100 in effective cost

50% back in gift card value

Hotel

About $220 for two nights

$100 pending Shopping Reward

About $120 in effective cost

About 45% back in gift card value

The rental car and hotel cost about $420 altogether. Capital One Shopping put $200 in rewards pending in my account, so after I can redeem those rewards, I will have received nearly half the trip cost back in gift card value.

Capital One Shopping is a free extension. You do not need a Capital One credit card. It finds offers and coupon codes, and the rewards can be redeemed for available gift cards. I often choose gift cards for things I already use, like DoorDash when it is available.

Offers and available gift cards can vary. Always activate the offer and read its terms before booking.

More travel hacks are coming.

Next, I will add the real tricks I use for hotel deals, points transfers, booking cruises, and finding travel offers that are actually worth it.

These are my personal experiences and general education, not financial advice. Offers, approval, reward tracking, gift card availability, fees, and card benefits can change. Always read the current terms and only spend what you planned to spend.
